Clone your key fob

Tired of buzzing yourself into the building?

If you are a West Peak resident and would like an additional RFID tag (key fob) to enter the building, you can purchase one from building management or I can create a copy for you – just like copying a key at a hardware store.

I charge $30 for one and $50 for two.

How do the doors at West Peak work?

When you present your key fob (a RFID tag) to the sensor beside the door (a RFID reader), the tag sends the reader its ID code (printed on the back of the tag). If this ID code is in the building’s database, the door is unlocked and you can enter the building.

When building management issues a key fob, they take a pre-programmed RFID tag and add its ID code to a database for the building. They charge you for the tag and their time. At the time of writing, building management quoted me $250.

What service does breakright provide?

I purchase re-programmable RFID tags and create clones or copies of key fobs issued by building management. You send me a picture of the ID code on your key fob and I program a new RFID tag to match that code. Then, I meet you in your lobby to test and deliver your new keys.

Are you “allowed” to clone your key fob?

In short, yes.

RFID tags are no different than regular keys. Unless otherwise prohibited (e.g., by terms of a lease or rental agreement), you are permitted to create copies of keys you own. I am no different than a hardware store that copies regular keys 🔑.

What else should you know?

You should treat your key fob(s) and RFID tag(s) like regular keys. If you are no longer authorized to access the building, you should return or destroy your key fob(s). If your key fob(s) are lost or stolen, you should report them to building management for deactivation. If building management deactivates your original key fob(s), all copies will also be deactivated.

I am not affiliated with building management, so I can offer no ongoing guarantees, warranties, nor support. Building management may not be happy about losing sales. There is no way for building management to prevent the use of cloned key fobs without replacing the entire access control system and/or issuing new key fobs to residents.
